A return rural visit for a great gig

By

Aug 30, 2015 gig, setlist , Comments are off

A year ago we were asked to play at the opening of a country pub near Andover.

Hurstbourne Tarrant
We were delighted to asked back to play at their first birthday party.

This nearly turned into the gig from hell as the car carrying Veronica, Frank, Nigel and the PA system got stuck in in terrible traffic despite having left what should have been more than enough time to get there well in advance.

Even on the last ten miles they got stuck behind a tractor for most of the way. This does not happen on the way to gigs in Camden.

We were due to start playing at 8pm. The rest of the band were therefore more than relieved when the PA turned up at 7:20.

With a little bit of luck, a lot of organisation and a 3 minute sound check we were still able to play our first song by a few minutes past 8.  It was good that we were playing in a marquee as they help prevent feedback.

And once we were playing everyone relaxed into a great party atmosphere and we played two hour long sets to much appreciation. Everyone seemed more chilled about our late arrival than we were – as we pride ourselves on a professional approach. But you can’t plan for that many accidents on the M25 and M4.

This is what we played.

  • Chinatown
  • Guns Of Navarone
  • Latin Goes Ska
  • Tide Is High
  • Mood For Love
  • Harder They Come
  • Alley Cat Ska
  • Man In The Street

Crystal Palace vintage festival

By

Jul 5, 2015 festival, setlist , Comments are off

We had a great time last weekend playing  the vintage event that was part of the Crystal Palace Overground festival.

We decided to play music from the 1960s or earlier for our set to make sure we kept to the vintage vibe. And this is what we played.

  • Chinatown
  • Guns Of Navarone
  • Latin Goes Ska
  • Mood For Love
  • Tide Is High
  • Fly Me To The Moon
  • Mambo Number 5
  • Simmer Down
  • Tainted Love
  • My Boy Lollipop
  • Gangsters

And we could have played many more 60s tunes if we had been given more time to play.

We hadn’t quite realised before that the Skamonics are an ideal fit for a vintage themed event. Normally they draw influences from a number of decades, but tend to rely on 40s swing for their music. There’s nothing wrong with that but adding some authentic 60s ska adds variety.

We commissioned some photos ourselves as we don’t have any good ones from an outdoor festival. Mouse over the one below to start the gallery. And there are some more photos and phone video taken by others on our Facebook page.

A 60th birthday party

We were delighted to play for Roger’s 60th on Saturday in Greenwich.

This is what we played:

  • Chinatown
  • Guns Of Navarone
  • Latin Goes Ska
  • Tide Is High
  • Mood For Love
  • Harder They Come
  • Man In The Street
  • Mambo Number 5
  • Egyptian Reggae
  • Enola Gay
  • Red Red Wine
  • Midnight Hour
  • One Step Beyond
  • Misirlou
  • James Bond
  • 99 Red Balloons
  • Tainted Love
  • Rudy A Message To You
  • My Boy Lollipop
  • Baggy Trousers
  • Night Boat To Cairo
  • Gangsters

This was the first time we’ve played Egyptian Reggae for many years (and in a new arrangement).

We were also happy to do Midnight Hour (not as ska or reggae) so that Roger could join us on the vocals, as he used to be in a band with members of the Skams.

And here are some pictures from the soundcheck.

A party gig

By

Apr 14, 2015 gig, setlist Comments are off

We played a private party gig on Saturday – in fact a significant birthday for our bass player Nigel.

We managed to video and record the gig, so after we have had the chance to do some mixing and editing, we should have some reasonably good quality live video of the band.

This is what we played.

Skanking the Earl Haig

By

Mar 6, 2015 gig, setlist Comments are off

The Earl Haig is an old British Legion social club in Crouch End now converted into a pub and social centre for the area.

We like it because it has a good stage, and great sound.

We played two sets last night, with special guest Jackie Grant making her debut on tenor sax.

It was too dark – and a bit too much of a rush – to take more than a few snaps.

But this is what we played:

Thanks to Elliot for being a great sound engineer.

A great night at Dumplins

By

Feb 9, 2015 gig, setlist Comments are off

We had a great night last Saturday at Dumplins Live Ska at the Fiddler’s Elbow., playing with Ipswich’s finest, The Downsetters.

As ever at Dumplins, there was great sound, a crowd who really like ska and a brilliant atmosphere. It is one of our favourite gigs.

It was only the second time that we have played Simmer Down, but it went down a storm.

This is what we played – the solos were extended on a few numbers so it was a longer set than perhaps it looks:

  • Chinatown
  • Latin Goes Ska
  • Mood For Love
  • Tide Is High
  • Man In The Street
  • Mambo Number 5
  • Simmer Down
  • Tainted Love
  • My Boy Lollipop
  • Night Boat To Cairo

We are hoping for some good photos as there was a talented photographer busy all evening. And we have put some snaps on our Facebook page.

A special gig

By

Nov 8, 2014 gig, setlist Comments are off

Sometimes everything comes together to make a gig a bit special.

That’s what happened last Thursday when we played the Earl Haig Hall in Crouch End.

It was by general agreement one of the best gigs we’ve played. It is hard to identify exactly why but these are some of the ingredients that helped.

It is a great venue, not just in the sense of being the kind of place that we’d enjoy coming to for a drink, but it has a proper stage with enough space for us to set up without all being on top of each other. Having a bit of space between us means that we are more likely to hear the rest of the band, and not just whoever is standing next to us.

The venue has a good sound system and someone who knows how to use it properly. This meant that not only was there good sound for the audience but on stage too.  We were well-balanced and the volume was right.

The audience was enthusiastic which always encourages us to play well. This was not a dance venue  (though that didn’t stop a certain amount of bopping between the tables and chairs). Sometimes that means we just become background music, but this was not the case on Thursday.

We played one long set which we think we paced well. And not having to turn up hours before we play is always a bonus too, as it tends to put us in a good mood.

So while we rarely have a bad gig, sometimes they do have an extra bit of magic. This one certainly did.

We hope we get invited back.

We didn’t have time to take pictures or any video so we have no souvenirs to share, but this is what we played.

Cupcakes in Basildon

By

Sep 28, 2014 gig, setlist , , Comments are off

Last night we went to Basildon – or more accurately Pitsea – to play a private function.

Here’s a clue to its purpose.Dadcake

This was a full-on ska party with decoration to match.

And there were lots of cakes.

John's birthday cake

Here are some pictures from the soundcheck, but we didn’t get the chance to get anyone to take us while we performed.

Franksoundchecksoundcheck2soundcheck3

We were asked to play Mirror in the Bathroom, Tears of a Clown and Red is Danger.

We’ve  never done Mirror in the Bathroom before and had played Tears of a Clown only once before many years ago (and not very well). So some frantic arranging and rehearsing went on to get them up to scratch.

We hadn’t played Red is Danger for some time either. It goes back to the very early days of the band.We enjoyed reviving this. It will get some more outings now.

We also added One Step Beyond to our repertoire as it’s the right kind of tune to start this kind of evening as we mean to go on.

This is what we played.

First set Second set
  • One Step Beyond
  • Guns Of Navarone
  • Tide Is High
  • Mood For Love
  • You’re Wondering Now
  • You Can Get It
  • Harder They Come
  • Red Is Danger
  • Man In The Street
  • Mirror In The Bathroom
  • Enola Gay
  • Red Red Wine
  • Price Tag

  • Tears Of A Clown
  • Rudy A Message To You
  • My Boy Lollipop

And this is what the client had to say afterwards.

“What can i say???? U guys were absolutely amazing. Everyone has been saying how bloody brilliant u were. I can still hear the music through my hangover. Thank u so much for making it such a great night xxxxx”

We had a great time too…

Reopening a pub

By

Aug 25, 2014 gig, setlist Comments are off

We were very happy to help re-open a pub – the George and Dragon – in the very pretty village of Hurstbourne Tarrant, near Andover on Saturday.

Hurstbourne Tarrant
This was perhaps our most unusual support act – the local MP declaring the pub reopened and pulling the first pint of the evening.

2014-08-23MP

The village also boasts a brewery, and one task for the evening was to chose which of two ales would become the official village ale.

Frank and Chris enthusiastically joined the judging.

The gig was in a marquee in the pub car park.

Gravel made a slightly odd dance floor, but that did not inhibit guests from dancing.

And this was the view from just across the road as the sun set, with some perhaps over enthusiastic photoshop.
