The original ska band &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Skatalites\">the Skatalites<\/a> &#8211; played any tune they fancied. <em>The Guns of Navarone<\/em> is perhaps thought of as a ska tune, but it started as the theme for the film of the same name. We cover the Skatalites version of Duke Ellington&#8217;s <em>Caravan<\/em>, inevitably renamed <em>Skaravan <\/em>&#8211; a cover of a cover. Quite often the pioneer Jamaican bands changed the name of the tunes, presumably in the hope of avoiding any license fees. Here&#8217;s a list of jazz tunes played by ska pioneers &#8211; it would be interesting to find out how <em>Take Five<\/em> became <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vS0uw_jat1g\">The Russians are Coming.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>That tradition has continued. So it good to see this free download compiled by <a href=\"http:\/\/marcoonthebass.blogspot.co.uk\/\">Marco on the Bass<\/a> on the wonderful cover versions blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.versionsgalore.com\/2012\/07\/05\/weve-turned-4vg-4th-anniversary-guest-mix-n-1marco-on-the-bass\/\">Versions Galore<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a wonderfully diverse mix drawn from bands around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Skamonics enjoy thinking up unexpected songs to cover.
