We’re getting ready for our gig on Friday at Round Midnight near the Angel.

Their website is down at the moment as it’s been hacked, but their address is

  • 13 Liverpool Road  London, Greater London N1 0RW.

It’s very near the Angel tube.

We’ll be playing two full sets. The first will start at around 9pm, and the second will kick off at about 11pm. That means that we will have to play almost every song and tune we know as there will be about two and a half hours of music.

More a marathon than a sprint.

Best of all it’s free to get in.

And if you are wondering what we are like live, here’s one of our instrumental tracks recorded at a recent gig. there will be lots of songs too on Friday.

New video – Latin goes ska at the Sebright Arms

Here’s a video put together after our recent gig in Bethnal Green.

The sound is pretty good for a live show as we’ve mixed the sound from the PA with some from one of the cameras. That’s come out as well as you can expect.

The video comes from some not terribly good cameras stuck round the stage and left on during the gig. It’s hardly professional, and half the band are mostly out of shot. But it’s still fun.

ska covers mix tape

The Skamonics enjoy thinking up unexpected songs to cover. Kylie and OMD  are just two to have enjoyed the Skamonics treatment.

Doing covers is nothing new in ska. The original ska band – the Skatalites – played any tune they fancied. The Guns of Navarone is perhaps thought of as a ska tune, but it started as the theme for the film of the same name. We cover the Skatalites version of Duke Ellington’s Caravan, inevitably renamed Skaravan – a cover of a cover. Quite often the pioneer Jamaican bands changed the name of the tunes, presumably in the hope of avoiding any license fees. Here’s a list of jazz tunes played by ska pioneers – it would be interesting to find out how Take Five became The Russians are Coming.

That tradition has continued. So it good to see this free download compiled by Marco on the Bass on the wonderful cover versions blog Versions Galore.

It’s a wonderfully diverse mix drawn from bands around the world.

Our next public gig – August 3rd – Round Midnight

Our next gig open to all is at the fab jazz and blues bar Round Midnight on Friday August 3rd.

It’s near the Angel Tube and it will be free to get in.

We’ll be playing two sets til late.

We had a great night the last time we were there – and given the amount of skanking going on so did the crowd.

More details soon – and possibly some gratuitous Olympics references.

We had a great time. Here are some pictures. There should be some video to come too.

Nigel stood in a dark corner all night. Bass players are like that. So there are none of him.

A special thanks to our guest alto player Ian.

If you missed this gig, our next public one is on Friday August 3rd at Round Midnight in Islington.
