Please bring a video camera to our gig

If you are coming to our gig on Friday, it would be great if you could bring a video camera and catch some of our set.

We are going to try and record the sound as well as we can, so if we can get a range of videos we should be able to edit them together and sync them to the good sound.

In which we share a stage with The Vaccines

Next Friday (June 29) we are playing the Sebright Arms in Bethnal Green. (more details of the gig are here and on Facebook here.)

Tonight the Vaccines are playing a special one off secret gig there.

So while there’s a week’s gap, we can now say that we have shared a stage with the Vaccines.

Not of course that we would ever mislead, sharing the stage is not the same as sharing the bill.

Indeed having played the 100 Club, incidentally on the same bill as Rico and Skaville UK, we can truthfully say that we have shared the bill with an enormous number of rock, pop and jazz greats.

counting down to our next gig – June 29th

We’re looking forward to our next gig at the Sebright Arms in Bethnal Green on June 29th.

This is a gig we are promoting ourselves as we have not had an outing in public for quite some time.

Poster Sebright ArmsWe are playing with our friends in the Electric Cucumbers – indeed we are so friendly that we let Frank, our guitarist, play the bass for them.

They are a very tight band, who play late 70s new wave covers. Think of bands like the Jam, Elvis Costello, the Stranglers, Ian Dury and the Undertones – in other words all the difficult stuff.

We think we can therefore say that between us we will be covering the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and whatever you want to call the first decade of this century.

But as there’s more from the 60s and 70s than anything else we think we right to call this ‘one night of retro goodness’.

We’re sharing the billing and will both do a set, but have agreed that the Skamonics will play first – at around 8:30 or so. This will give friends who complain that we always play too late to get home by public transport a chance to hear us.

There’s a Facebook event you can use to invite friends. We’ve also got some colour posters if anyone wants to help publicise it.

And if you can’t make this we will be at Round Midnight, near the Angel, on August 3rd. We’ll be playing two long sets there.

>We now know the details for our next gig.

This is one we are putting on ourselves – and are sharing the bill with our good friends the Electric Cucumbers.

Careful study may reveal one musician who will be playing all night.

It’s at the Sebright Arms – a great pub just off the Hackney Road. Here’s the poster.

The Skamonics will play first – though there’s equal billing and both bands will play sets of the same length.

We thought this would give a chance for fans who have to travel and say we are always on too late to come and see us play.

If you want a download an A4 pdf poster, you can find one here

It’s up as a Facebook event here – so use this to share and invite your friends.

There will be a special offer on our CD on the night.

Thanks to one of our fans for passing on some camera phone footage from our recent gig at Round Midnight.

It’s not the highest quality of course, but we kind of like it. Neither are the whole song, but there’s a good chunk of each.

We’re playing at Round Midnight on Friday – and they have a page here promoting the gig.

We have a rhythm section rehearsal tonight, and will be seeing if we can knock up a version of Let’s Work Together, given that our singer Veronica is featured on the new single, so we can do it on Friday.

Great gig in Rotherhithe

>Update: We’ve had a nice message from our clients:

” Thanks so much for playing on Saturday, we had such a fantastic time. We’d like to send you all a card “

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We had huge fun playing for D and N’s wedding blessing last night. This was at the Hilton hotel on the banks of the Thames in Rotherhithe, just across the river from Canary Wharf.
As Steve’s photo shows, it was a beautifully clear evening though not the time of year for outdoor gigs.

We learnt three new songs at the couple’s request. For their first dance we had to knock up a quick arrangement of They can’t take that away from me. This is an old jazz standard written by George Gershwin, though we suspect many people today are more likely to know the Robbie Williams version and probably think it’s called The way you wear your hat as at least some of the band did. As we already do songs like Fly me to the moon and In the Mood for Love,  we know how to ska up these great old swing tunes.
For their second song they wanted Moondance. We didn’t think this could really be done with a ska or reggae feel so did it rather like the original.
We had the most fun with Hava Nagila. This introduced the band to the traditional chair-lifting that goes with this old tune at Jewish ceremonies. And it makes for a great bit of ska, allowing Steve to demonstrate the klezmer side of his clarinet playing. We will be playing this one again.
Here’s the set list we played.
They Can’t Take That Away from mea special request for the first dance
Moondanceanother request
Guns Of Navaroneall ska bands have to play this
Latin Goes Ska – a favourite 60s ska instrumental
I’m in the Mood For Love – swinging ska jazz that we often do as a first dance
You’re Wondering Now – a 60s ska song that Amy Winehouse recorded
Alley Cat Ska – another 60s instrumental
Man In The Street –  and another
Fly Me To The Moon – ska swing
Can’t Get You Out out of my Head – Kylie goes ska
Enola Gay – many 80s songs make great ska
10 Out Of 10 -Paolo Nutini proves that great ska songs are still being written
Hava Nagila –probably the best known Jewish song, which we do as an instrumental

Second Set

James Bond instrumental classic
Misirlou – from Greece to surf guitar classic to the Skamonics!
99 Red Balloons –another 80s classic
Tainted Love – and another
Rudy A Message To You – a 60s song that evryone associates with the Specials
My Boy Lollipop – more 60s
Baggy Trousers our Madness tribute
Israelites  – Desmond Dekker’s great reggae song
Night Boat To Cairo – and another Madness song

Encore

Gangsters – more Specials
Tequila not ska, but a another great 60s instrumental and party favourite

We have a very rough recording of the gig, and more photos, so there should be more to come.
